Mount of Temptation

The Mount of Temptation, featuring a monastery clinging to its steep slopes, is where Jesus faced temptation during his 40-day fast. Standing about 360 meters above sea level, it offers stunning views of the Jordan Valley and Dead Sea. Located 5km northwest of Jericho, access to the summit is possible via a 30-minute hike or a 5-minute cable car ride from Tel Jericho. Unlike some Orthodox monasteries, the Monastery of the Temptation welcomes both men and women visitors. Also known as Mount Quarantania or Jebel Quarantul, it symbolizes the duration of Jesus’ fast and inspired the Christian practice of Lent.
