Jordan River: Water Baptism

The Baptism Site of Jesus by John the Baptist is believed to be on the Jordanian side of the Jordan River, at Wadi Al-Kharrar. This area boasts over 20 ancient Christian sites, including churches and baptismal pools dating back to Roman and Byzantine periods.

Excavations began in 1996, facilitated by the clearing of landmines following the Jordan-Israel border. Access improved after the 1994 peace treaty, with Jordan building roads and a visitors’ center. Various denominations erected churches, notably the Greek Orthodox Church of St. John the Baptist.

Located near the southern end of the Jordan River, opposite Jericho and 8 kilometers south of the King Hussein (Allenby) Bridge, it’s approximately a 40-minute drive from Amman
