Garden of Gethsemane

The garden of Gethsemane, situated near the Mount of Olives, is where Jesus prayed with his disciples before his crucifixion. Covering about 1200 square meters, the garden, whose name means “oil press” in Hebrew, is known for its ancient olive trees, still used for pressing oil. Adjacent to the garden stands the Church of All Nations, built on the rock where Jesus is believed to have agonized in prayer before his betrayal. Nearby, the Grotto of Gethsemane is thought to be where Jesus and his disciples spent their nights, with tradition also associating the area with the Tomb of Mary, Jesus’ mother.
